ABOUT THE FACILITATORS & WORKSHOPS

Melanie Buffel

Melanie inherited her love of canning home preserves from her maternal grandmother who had a lovely pantry of jewel coloured jars of goodies at her farm. Melanie honed her skills while operating The Midnight Goddess Preserves selling jams, jellies, marmalade and pickles at the East Vancouver Farmer's Market for 12 years. Melanie is a core team member at Abundance Community Farm and is committed to preserving the bounty of the harvest each year to provide food during the winter and spring.

Canning 101: Join Melanie in creating a low sugar jam and a pickle or salsa using the hot water canning method. We will use local fruit and the produce from the farm to create yummy homemade canning.

---------------

Beatriz

My name is Beatriz (also known as Bea) and I've lived in Vancouver for 24 years. I am a crafty person who likes to make many things with my hands, from painting walls and making beeswax wraps to brewing kombucha.

For the last decade I have been inspired by my two lovely children, my friends and community to make organic, tasty and whole food meals, snacks and treats to satisfy their palate and enrich their vitality.

I like to bring consciousness to my world and those around me. I considered myself an artisan per nature as I like to make most of my food, house products, and many things from scratch instead of buying them. Using some of my values to bring awareness to the world I live in, taking responsibility and practicing simple principles as recycling, reusing, repurposing.

Beeswax Wraps: we will bring more consciousness to our lives, by reducing the amount of plastic we consume and replacing them by simple like a cloth wrap in bees wax, as a way of preserving veggies in more sustainable way. The wraps have a natural preservative power and keep foods like bread, avocados, cut veggies fresh for weeks. What’s extra cool is that the warmth of your hands will shape them as needed (around bowls, jars or foods),

Yarrow will be offering a presentation & discussion around her experience with over a decade of homesteading on her property in Cherryville. Yarrow offers a wealth of information and skills with an overview perspective on the lifestyle choices of the modern day homesteader.
